He was sacked from four teams, now Eze has been called up by Southgate to the England squad
It is said that success is born of many failures. Eberechi Eze, who was kicked out of four academies in his youth, only to later break through in a Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace jersey, could tell us something about that. Now he is preparing for an England national team reunion.
It is said that success is born of many failures. Eberechi Eze, who was kicked out of four academies in his youth, only to later break through in a Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace jersey, could tell us something about that. Now he is preparing for an England national team reunion.
Eberechi Eze started his football career at Arsenal but was released by the club at the age of 13. “I remember crying in my room for a week and my mum telling me it would be OK,” Eze told Wonderkids.
The young Englishman decided to stay in London, from the 2011/12 season he was in the academy of Fulham, who again terminated his contract during the 2013/14 season. By the end of the season he was at Reading, but was released after six months.
From the summer of 2014 he played for two years in Millwall’s Under-18 team, the club also arranged his studies. After that, however, his contract was not renewed again. He left for Queens Park Rangers, which was a life decision.
After a year in the under-21 team, he reached professional football level for the first time. On loan at Wycombe Wanderers he played League One and from the following season (2018/19) he was already part of the A-team of the second league QPR. He was 20 years old at the time.
The 2019/20 season marked a career turning point. 14 goals and eight assists not only got him nominated for Championship Player of the Year, it also secured him a move to the Premier League as Crystal Palace reached out for him.
He had a very good first season at the London club, but was plagued by injuries in the second. In any case, he impressed English football fans with several attributes. Excellent dribbling, long-range shooting and direct kicks.
This season Eze has played all 38 rounds of the Premier League with a record of 10+4. Mainly due to the successful end of the season, coach Gareth Southgate nominated him for the England A-team for the first time.
To complete the fairy tale of the boy who was kicked out of four teams in his youth, perhaps only one step is missing – a transfer to a top club. Eze has time anyway, at 24 he’s a mainstay of a stable Premier League team and now he’s getting ready for a national team reunion!
