He should have been like Haaland, instead Hojlund rubs misery with need. The reason? Poor quality teammates at Manchester United, Jaap Stam is clear
Rasmus Hojlund was supposed to be the missing piece to the Manchester United puzzle that Erik ten Hag has been trying to put together for over a year. Compared to last season, however, things are looking much worse and the Danish signing is not doing well either. However, Jaap Stam doesn’t see the problem in the talented striker, but rather in his teammates.
Rasmus Hojlund is not doing well at Old Trafford
Stam knows Manchester United very well. After all, he spent 3 years there and won 3 Premier League championships in a row, so there was no one better in any season. But then Sir Alex Ferguson made one of the biggest mistakes of his life, as he admitted in his autobiography, and sent the Dutch giant away from Old Trafford.
Even so, Manchester United functioned brilliantly for many more years until the Scottish coach decided to leave. Since then, fans have experienced one miserable season after another.
Meanwhile, every transfer window sees new and often very overpriced faces arrive in Manchester, failing to fulfil the potential they came to Old Trafford with.
Unfortunately, although it’s too early to draw any conclusions, that’s how we have to assess Hojlund. The Danish striker has already played 9 league games, but has yet to score a goal. He is only doing well in the Champions League, where he has scored 5 goals in 4 matches. However, in all the three matches in which he has managed to score, Manchester United have lost. He is very close to elimination.
Poor quality players at Old Trafford, says Stam
We’ve already bitten the bullet. That’s how much money Manchester United have spent on new signings since Ferguson’s departure, but virtually no-one has been any brighter. You’re more likely to think of a lot of wasted talent.
Stam has his own thoughts on the subject, speaking to Soccernews: ” Hojlund made a good impression on me. I think he’s a great player. He’s very talented, he has an excellent left foot, really good physicality and great speed. And he showed all that in his first games for United.”
So the former Dutch stopper definitely doesn’t see a problem with Hojlund. But that is no longer the case with his teammates, whom he does not consider worthy of wearing the red jersey.
“When he comes to such a big club at a very young age, it’s not easy to show your qualities. He also needs quality players around him to create scoring opportunities. But he is playing in a team that lacks confidence. He has players around him who don’t have it and maybe don’t have the quality to play at this level,” Stam continued to explain.
The current coach of the Cincinnati team, which is not doing too well, having won only 8 times out of 47 games under the Dutch legend, nevertheless has a lot of faith in Hojlund.
