Liverpool’s defeat was heavily contributed to by their goalkeeper Loris Karius, who left The Reds for good this summer. Where has he now signed a new contract?
The final score of one of football’s highlights of 2018 was 3-1 to the White Ballet. The German goalkeeper eased his way to victory with two of his misses.
Although it later emerged that he was playing with a concussion after an elbow strike from Sergio Ramos, he spent the rest of his engagement at the Liverpool big club on loan. After the failed match, he did not play another competitive match for Jürgen Klopp’s side.
After that, he played two seasons in Turkish Beşiktaş and in 2020 he was at Liverpool only during the summer break. In the following season, Karius fulfilled the role of goalkeeper number two at Bundesliga side Union Berlin.
The twenty-nine-year-old’s contract at the English big club expired at the end of this June. However, he remains part of the Premier League. As a free agent, he signed a short-term contract with Newcastle.
His four-month contract at his new place of employment could be extended until the end of the season in January thanks to an option. It is a reaction from the North of England club to the injury of goalkeeper Karl Darlow. Nick Pope is the current number one in the Strak goal.
“He’s a very good goalkeeper with Premier League and European experience and will provide competition and support in an important part of the season,” said team coach Eddie Howe on Karius’ address, according to the club’s official website.
And what led Loris Karius to sign the contract? “The reason was to return to the Premier League, the best league in the world. I think Newcastle has a great coach. They’re building something really exciting and playing good football. I feel it is a good project to be part of,” he said in an initial interview with Newcastle United’s website.
