He laughed at Martínez’s height. After a month, Carragher failed, and instead of player of the month, he’s now the laughing stock. See why
In his first month in the Premier League, Lisandro Martínez has won the award for the best player of the month wearing a Manchester United jersey. At the start of the season, he was laughed at for being too small and it wouldn’t work.
In his first month in the Premier League, Lisandro Martínez has won the award for the best player of the month wearing a Manchester United jersey. At the start of the season, he was laughed at for being too small and it wouldn’t work. Only, thanks to the provisional stats, everyone else is now a laughing stock, just not the Argentine butcher who is earning respect match after match.
The skilful and tough defender looks very good in combination with Raphaël Varane, which of course has relegated the Manchester United captain to the bench. Harry Maguire may yet find his niche, but getting into the starting line-up through this pair will be difficult as things stand.
This is, of course, very pleasing news for Red Devils fans who have been waiting in vain for a new stopper duo to live up to what they came up with at Old Trafford since the end of the Vidic – Ferdinand pairing.
Most pleasing are the statistics of the Argentine stopper, who won 83% of his aerial duels, more than any other stopper in the current Premier League season. Even a mountain like Kalidou Koulibaly is worse off.
Carragher vs. Manchester United
In August, Martínez got the worst of it from former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Carragher, who is an expert on Sky Sports. In fact, according to the now 44-year-old Englishman, the Argentine stopper does not have a Premier League place because of his height, certainly not in a four-man defence. It simply cannot work, the 2004/05 Champions League winner claimed.
But aside from that, Carragher hasn’t won anything major in his career and has only watched Manchester United win one title after another. And this is obviously very much on his mind, as he has been harshly critical of Cristiano Ronaldo, who subsequently embarrassed him on live TV when he shook hands with everyone involved in the warm-up, apart from Martínez.
His celebration in the studio after Liverpool scored a goal was also a bit hilarious.
What can I say, Carragher is not in the form of his life and right at the start of the new Premier League season, the whole world is having fun at his expense as his judgements boomerang.
