He is not afraid to admit his highest ambitions and now he is proving them at the Masters in Rome. In his last match, Stefanos Tsitsipas decapitated Australian De Minaur. He is now on his way to another great success in the Italian capital.

Tsitsipas back in the top ten

He was part of the world’s elite ten for a long time but dropped out this year. Fortunately for the Athens native, only for a while. But Stefanos Tsitsipas is aiming even higher and he’s not afraid to admit it. He still dreams of becoming world number one. And he’s going for his dream.

In April, he reached the final of two tournaments in a row. In Monte Carlo, he succeeded by beating Casper Ruud. He returned the favour a week later in Barcelona.

It was these results that caused the Greek tennis player to return to the top ten of the ATP rankings. The one-handed backhand champion is now set for further success in Rome.

The road to the title in Rome

In the Italian capital, Tsitsipas has recorded perhaps every possible result. He has played in the semi-finals and the final. But he is still waiting for a triumph. This year at the Italian Masters he is one of the hot favourites for the title, and not only because of his results in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

The Greek tennis player is playing perfectly in Rome, and it took him just one hour of play to beat his top ten ranked competitor De Minaur. Tsitsipas was better at everything. He won 14:4 on winning balls and the whole match 6:1, 6:2. De Minaura avenged his defeat in March this year.

However, the fact that one big competitor after another is falling out of his path to the Roman triumph is playing into his hands. Rising stars Sinner and Alcaraz are not taking part in the tournament. World number one Djokovic’s performance here was also disastrous.

Nadal is hardly close to the form to beat the best, and he also finished in Rome. Last year’s defending champion, Daniil Medvedev, was also a surprise finisher on Tuesday.

Tsitsipas has everything in his hands. Of the ATP top ten, only Germany’s Zverev and Poland’s Hurkacz continue to play alongside him. His triumph in Rome would bring him at least one place closer to achieving his dream position among the best tennis players in the world.
