Kylian Mbappé at PSG? Or will he move to Real Madrid? Will he stay in Paris? No, he’ll go to Spain. Or will he stay after all? That’s roughly how the speculation about the French striker has been spilling over for the last three years. But now the ice may have shifted.
Kylian Mbappé at PSG? Or will he move to Real Madrid? Will he stay in Paris? No, he’ll go to Spain. Or will he stay after all? That’s roughly how the speculation about the French striker has been spilling over for the last three years. But now the ice may have shifted.
Real Madrid and Kylian Mbappé, it’s a never-ending story. The French youngster made his first appearance in the white jersey at the age of 13, when he even started a game and scored a goal. It was then that he also met his idols Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane during his visit.
However, his mother didn’t want him to leave home so young, so the transfer didn’t happen. The second time Real were interested in Mbappé was in 2017 after a phenomenal season at Monaco, only for the Frenchman to opt for a move to PSG. And a three-year saga ensued.
In the summer of 2021, Real sent several official offers, one even for a record €150 million, all just a year before the end of his contract. But PSG ignored the offers and refused to sell Mbappé. The player himself then let it be known that he wanted to leave for Madrid but was not allowed to.
Loyalty bonus
But a year later, when he could have left for free and reportedly promised to come to President Pérez in the winter, an extremely generous offer that made him the highest paid footballer on the planet, as well as a signing bonus of 100 million euros, finally reversed his decision. He was to receive another huge bonus in the tens of millions of euros after two years as a “loyalty bonus”.
But that’s the problem. If he leaves now in the summer, he won’t get the loyalty bonus. And according to several leading Spanish and French journalists, this is the reason why Mbappé is reluctant to leave this year, but insists on completing his contract and then leaving for free.
But PSG wants to avoid that and wants to get at least something back for the world’s most valuable player. That’s why the transfer got into a tight spot, with Mbappé insisting on leaving in a year’s time to get more money from the bonus, PSG on selling already this year.
According to renowned journalist Ramón Álvarez of the MARCA newspaper, PSG thus decided to take a crucial step to resolve the whole situation. The Parisians will pay Mbappé part of his loyalty bonus, thus untying his hands to leave, which the club’s management is already heavily leaning towards.
So, according to Álvarez, a deal for Mbappé’s departure is now on the table. So it will be interesting to see if the saga surrounding the French superstar finally comes to a close.
