Khamzat Chimaev hadn’t been in his cage for more than half a year, so he was a bit desperate about his situation. Now, however, it looks like the UFC matchmakers are working on an intriguing top-five middleweight contender with whom he has an interesting history.
A desperate Chimaev has been waiting a long time for a fight, so he’s challenging anyone
He pays as one of UFC boss Dana White’s best hopes. Khamzat Chimaev flew into the world’s biggest MMA organization like a hurricane, sweeping two opponents in ten days. As a result, he has been somewhat desperate about his situation in recent weeks, having not fought in over six months.
Recently, he literally caused an uproar in the mixed martial arts world when he insulted many UFC stars. One of them was Moravian samurai Jiri Prochazka, with whom he had several verbal exchanges over sparring from four years ago.
But the still undefeated Chimaev is currently waiting for an opponent. Although he is ranked third in the UFC welterweight rankings, his days in the division appear to be numbered after failing to meet the 4kg weight limit in September.
Now it seems he’s finally got an interesting opponent
Dana White confirmed some time ago that his next opponent will come from the middleweight division. Now it looks like it’s really going to happen. The UFC is preparing a fight that will surely attract a lot of attention.
The UFC has offered Khamzat a top five middleweight, Brazilian Paulo Costa, as an opponent. He was originally scheduled to face Robert Whittaker at February’s UFC 284, however, the Brazilian troublemaker has not agreed to a new contract.
At this point, according to media reports, he has already agreed to four more fights with the organization’s management. According to his manager, he is now the highest paid Brazilian in the entire organization, as he is expected to be paid more than one million dollars for each fight.
A few days ago, the media already reported that the aforementioned fight would take place in October at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, but Chimaev certainly won’t want to wait that long. So the UFC is negotiating a closer date.
Both men got into a scuffle last year at the UFC Performance Institute, where team members had to hold them down. After the altercation, they still exchanged some harsh messages on social media, so the fight would definitely have a spicy flavor.
