Schick scored the goal of the year at the European Championship, but FIFA decided otherwise.

Is it just bad luck? What is behind the Czech striker not winning a single award? Marketing must have played a big role in deciding the Euro’s top scorer. Ronaldo is, after all, one of the biggest football brands in the world. Patrik Schick was just being discovered by the football world at the time.

But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s unfair. The Bayer Leverkusen striker had another chance to win the prestigious individual trophy in Monday’s final for the 2021 Puskás Award (best goal of the year), awarded by FIFA.

Schick was in the running for the nomination with his incredible Euro record-breaking goal. The goal against Scotland came from the greatest distance (45.446 metres) since detailed statistics have been measured (1980) at European Championships.

Still, FIFA decided that the best goal was scored by Erik Lamela, who scored a goal with a rabona while still in a Tottenham jersey. Many fans see this as another robbery of the Czech striker.

The reaction of the fans

Fans were vocal on Twitter after the awards. While most of them were happy with the Player of the Year award going to Polish goal scorer Robert Lewandowski, many disagreed with the Goal of the Year award.

“This is a rip-off of Patrik Schick.”

“Worst goal winner of the year since the Puskás Award.”

“Patrik Schick has been robbed twice in the last 7 months. First he was robbed of the Golden Boot (for the Euro), now the Puskás Award. A disgrace.”

“Lamela? What the hell is going on with these awards? Schick would be a complete certainty! Time to turn off the signal.”

Interestingly, almost all the comments come from abroad. The fact that the award should have gone to the Czech forward is mainly due to Bundesliga fans, but there have also been voices from Spain and Albania.
