Indeed, much has been said and written about the seven-time champion and his potential new contract in recent months. Both financially and sportingly, in terms of his alleged association with Ferrari.
But in the end, it looked exactly as some experts said it would. Hamilton simply wanted to put more pressure on his current employer. The British active legend’s current contract expires at the end of this year.
And as for a new contract, Hamilton is said to be confident that Mercedes’ current form will not affect his negotiations for a new deal.
The two sides have reportedly already held discussions about a new contract, with Hamilton and his team still unable to agree terms.
The issue is reportedly not money, but Hamilton’s future role in the team and other projects. The Stevenage native is set to become a Mercedes ambassador when his active career ends.
But when Hamilton will hang up his racing gloves is a question. But one thing is certain, the 38-year-old Briton wants to win his eighth championship title, and thus establish himself at the top of the historical charts.
“Before the end of the season we will have a (new) contract well in hand. I still believe in this team 100%, even though it took us all longer to get where we wanted to be. It’s definitely not easy, ” Hamilton told Racing News 365.
“But I believe we’ll get to where we belong. We just have to keep working and keep getting off the ground,” the seven-time champion added.
