Hamilton: career over? I still have something to offer Formula 1. What did the British champion say in a recent interview?
Formula 1 is currently on its mandatory summer break and Lewis Hamilton is currently making a lot of statements. In fact, he said in a recent interview that he still has a lot to offer the queen of motorsport, not just on the track, and he is not currently looking to say goodbye. Formula One drivers from the previous generation are slowly but surely ending their careers. Last year Kimi Räikkönen left the queen of motorsport, this year is also the last year for Sebastian Vettel.
And within the next two years, we probably won’t see Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton in F1 either, although both are still very good drivers. But you can’t race forever.
So the seven-time world champion still says he’s not going to leave F1 just yet. His contract at Mercedes expires at the end of the 2023 season and, as Hamilton himself says, he still feels he has the chance to achieve a lot of success not only on the race track but also off it.
However, this year’s championship is all but decided, with standings leader Max Verstappen enjoying a huge lead over second-placed Charles Leclerc. Hamilton is therefore likely to focus on next year as he looks to challenge for an eighth world title. Vettel’s retirement has reportedly not inspired him to quit anyway.
Diversity, diversity, ecology
“I think it’s a reminder that I’m at that point in my career where the people I came up with and raced with for so long start to stop,” Hamilton said at a press conference after the Hungarian Grand Prix.
“Before we know it, Fernando won’t be here either, and then who’s left? I’ll probably be the oldest! But no, it hasn’t made me think about retirement either,” he added.
“I’m currently thinking about what steps I can take and how we can improve this car to make this team win again. But I’m also thinking about what we can do in our fight for more diversity, I’m thinking about a lot of things,” he explains.
In fact, in addition to his racing career, Hamilton is also dedicated to his charitable foundation, Mission 44, through which he remains committed to diversity and helping to integrate into Formula 1. As he said afterwards, he still has “a lot of ideas in the tank” and a lot to contribute.
The British driver also praised Vettel for his activist work in highlighting environmental issues and humanitarian efforts during his F1 career and hopes to continue what the German driver has championed.
