Max Verstappen won the controversial Australian Grand Prix and continues to confirm his great form. And not just his, but Red Bull’s as a team. Second place went to Lewis Hamilton, who broke Michael Schumacher’s record in the race. Verstappen has equalled Ayrton Senna’s record.

Fifth place in Bahrain, 50 seconds behind the race winner, and also in Saudi Arabia, Lewis Hamilton finished fifth, but this time “only” 31 seconds behind. The seven-time Mercedes champion did not start the new year well.

However, in the last Australian Grand Prix he partially corrected his results with the help of the safety car. He finished second, on the podium, and moved up to fourth in the drivers’ championship with 38 points.

A nice bonus on top of that is that he also broke the record of the legendary Michael Schumacher. By turning off all five lights, both Mercedes drivers beat Max Verstappen, who started from pole position.

So the Australian Grand Prix was led by George Russell ahead of Hamilton. The seven-time champion then took the lead thanks to an early stop by the former. And it was with this feat that he set a new Formula One record.

While it may be one of the records that won’t be broken as much as others in Hamilton’s successful career, the British driver has now led at least one lap of the race for 17 years in a row.

Better put, in every year or season of his Formula One career there has been a race in which he has led the race for at least one lap. The previous holder of this record was Schumacher, who did this in 16 consecutive years.

Verstappen matched Senna

The individual record was also equalled, not broken, by race winner Verstappen. The Dutch Red Bull driver scored another podium, his 80th overall, with his first place. He thus equaled the number of podiums by the Brazilian Senna.

But in addition to that, Verstappen also equalled Fernando Alonso’s record by taking his 22nd pole position in qualifying for Sunday’s race. He shares 13th place with the star Spaniard.
