Will Erling Haaland leave for Real Madrid? It’s certainly a real possibility in 2024, with the Royal Club ready to bring in the Norwegian forward to replace Karim Benzema. Will the Manchester City striker become the most expensive player in the world in the future?
Spanish newspaper AS came up with the information in the last few hours that Real Madrid have renewed their interest in Haaland’s services. The Spanish outfit is said to consider this as their transfer priority for 2024.
This is regardless of whether the club manages to bring Kylian Mbappé or not. According to the Transfermarkt website, Haaland’s current market value stands at €170 million, but AS reports that Real are counting on a price tag of €220-240 million.
This is because the Madrid club’s management wants to ideally time the Norwegian goalkeeper’s arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu, just in the wake of Karim Benzema’s departure. Real are reportedly ready to offer the French striker a one-year contract extension and replace him with Haaland in 2024.
A potential transfer of Haaland from Manchester City to Real Madrid was already discussed last year. However, the Spanish giant eventually backed away from the move, also because Benzema was in the form of his life, as evidenced by his Ballon d’Or win.
The Leeds native is under contract in Manchester until June 30, 2027, with Citizens coach Pep Guardiola having his exit clause extended until 2025. This was negotiated by Haaland and his agent on his arrival and it reads clearly. It won’t take effect until 2024.
It is €200 million and cannot be used by English clubs, City’s direct competition for the title. European teams have the chance to buy him out, and there are not many that can afford to invest such a sum.
The well-known journalist Fabrizio Romano then states that this exit clause will be increased in the coming years, only currently it is not clear to what amount. But the daily AS comes with the information that for 2025 and 2026 the exit clause should remain the same.
Either way, Haaland could easily become the new most expensive player on the planet. That still leaves Neymar, who transferred to PSG from Barcelona in 2017 for a sum of 222 million euros.
Super Madrid
It’s no secret that Real will try to assemble an attacking trio in 2024 that will dominate European football for years to come. It is in this year that Kylian Mbappé will become a free agent and the arrival of Haaland is scheduled. And in conjunction with Vinícius, this could be one of the best attacking trios in football history.
Plus, Real will have a huge percentage of their current wage bill calculated. After this point, Benzema, Luka Modric, Eden Hazard and maybe even Toni Kroos will no longer be at the club. The Spanish outfit will save around €50 million in wages on this foursome alone.
Haaland, after his arrival in Manchester last year, has already managed to play 37 competitive games and score 42 goals for the Citizens. Mbappé has registered 202 goals and 96 assists in 250 games for PSG, while Vinícius has played 211 games for the White Ballet, scoring 55 goals and making 54 assists.
