Erling Haaland is only in his second year in the English Premier League, yet he is on the verge of another historic milestone. The Norwegian cannonballer could become the top scorer in the history of the Manchester derby in the league duel between City and United.
Top scorers in Manchester derby history
A pair of players top the historical table. Wayne Rooney is indelibly one of the top scorers in the entire Premier League. He rolled for Manchester United for 13 years and in most seasons the Red Devils dominated their city rival.
Rooney has scored a brilliant 8 goals in the Premier League in the city rival’s net. The scissor goal in particular is worth highlighting, as it is one of the best goals in the history of the competition. Above all, the 2-1 win meant a lot to United in the title chase. The Englishman scored 3 more goals in the derby as part of the English cups.
Sergio Aguero is the second player to have 8 goals in the Manchester derby. The Argentine thus shares and provisional lead with Rooney. However, neither of them will surely add another goal. Aguero spent 10 years in the colours of Manchester City and made an indelible mark on the history of the club.
The Argentine scored his first goal in the Red Devils’ net on November 23, 2011 in his club’s record 6-1 win. Sir Alex Ferguson must still be having nightmares about that match today. He scored one more goal against rival Aguero in the English cups.
How is Haaland doing against United?
Erling Haaland set a new goalscoring record in his debut season in the Premier League, topping the scorers’ table by 6 goals ahead of England’s Harry Kane, who would have scored another triumph without the Norwegian marksman. The Norwegian scorer gifted Guardiola the long-awaited Champions League and with it the first treble in Manchester City’s history and the second in the history of English football.
You could say he blew out Manchester United like a candle in the very first encounter, a hat-trick enjoyed by David de Gea. Phil Foden also scored a hat-trick in the same game and together the duo outclassed their rivals 6-3.
In the second game, fortunately for the Hague side, the Norwegian striker did not make an impact and sat idly by as his team were defeated at Old Trafford.
However, the same scenario was not the case in their first meeting this season. The Citizens won 3-0 at Old Trafford and Haaland scored 2 goals, assisted by Foden for the third goal. He added another goal in the city rivals’ net in the last game.
Even though Haaland has missed a lot of games this season due to a foot injury, he still tops the scorers table with a 2 goal lead over Watkins.
Currently, Haaland is on 7 goals in the Manchester United net in the Premier League. It must be said that he only needed 4 duels, the players before him have played far more games.
Hot on Nora’s heels is Phil Foden, who already has 6 goals to his name and is putting up an even fight with his teammate. Unfortunately for Haaland, he won’t be able to break that record until next season.
