Monday’s Africa Cup of Nations programme will feature a match between Guinea and Gambia. Gambia, on the other hand, has not lost in the tournament yet. What to expect from the match?
Guinea lost in the last round of the group stage, leaving Senegal in first place. They go into the play-offs with a balanced record of one win, a draw and a loss and a 2-2 record.
Gambia is the biggest surprise of the tournament. It passed the group stage unexpectedly smoothly, winning against Mauritania and Tunisia, losing only two points in the match against Mali. It went through to the knockout phase from second place in the group.
Guinea has a very interesting team. At the tip of the attack runs the cat of Slavia Sory Kaba from Midtjylland, in the midfield Amadou Diawara from AS Rome. The biggest star of the selection, Naby Keita, scored one of Guinea’s two goals in the tournament.
In all of Gambia’s goals, Musa Barrow was among the fingers, the speedy winger scoring one goal and assisting twice. Ablie Jallow, who has experience in the Belgian or French league, is also doing well, having made two appearances at the tournament.
Guinea scored only two goals in the tournament, and advanced thanks to a good defensive performance. It has kept a clean sheet in three of its last four matches.
Moreover, Gambia is not one of the most productive teams, scoring just three goals in their last five matches.
Given Guinea’s well-functioning defence, I think they will win and therefore advance in normal time.
