Guardiola: One day we will reach the final of the LM and win it. We are here to make it this season
Manchester City enter another Champions League battle tonight. Although Pep Guardiola’s team is regarded as probably the strongest in the world, this competition is cursed to him, he has only been in the final once in history. Will it come a second time this time?
Manchester City enter another Champions League battle tonight. Although Pep Guardiola’s team is regarded as probably the strongest in the world, this competition is cursed to him, he has been in the final only once in history. Will it come a second time this time?
Last year, it looked like the Citizens were really close. At home they were beating Real Madrid, leading 3-1 and 4-2, with chances to score 6 or more goals. But Benzema and co. managed to pull off an acceptable 3:4 result for the home side.
In the return leg, however, Mahrez sent the Citizens into the lead and it seemed to be done, as Real had to score two goals in extra time and the scoreboard was already showing the 90th minute.
However, that’s when youngster Rodrygo came to the rescue, scoring two goals in two minutes to send the game into extra time, where Benzema decided the game and Citizens were once again left with only eyes to cry on.
“Last year we came here with the desire to go through to the final. We played really well in both games. But it was not enough,” sighed Citizens coach Pep Guardiola at a press conference.
“I’m sure one day it will happen. One day we will reach the final and win it. We are here to make it this season,” the Spanish coach commanded.
The Citizens are in the semi-finals for the third time in a row, having reached the final the year before last year where they fell short to Chelsea, and last year they were knocked out in the semi-finals at the feet of Real Madrid. Now they have a chance for revenge.
“Last year we wanted to win so badly. But it didn’t happen because we played against Real Madrid and they know exactly what to do in the Champions League,” Guardiola said.
