Guardiola, are you watching? Striker Julián Álvarez, who was bought by Manchester City in the winter and left on loan at River Plate, scored 6 goals in the Copa Libertadores. He has thus made a pretty loud bid for attention for the new season.
Álvarez is a big Argentine talent and there was a queue for him. Eventually, Manchester City secured his signature on the last day of January, with the understanding that he will remain on loan at River Plate for at least another six months.
And the 22-year-old striker is doing everything he can to ensure he does not return to Argentina in the summer. After the Copa Libertadores match against Alianza Lima, he took home two balls. Two. He scored six goals, or two hat-tricks. He made it a crushing 8-1 win.
He’s the first player in the club’s history to achieve a similar feat. And on a day when River Plate was celebrating its 121st anniversary. Álvarez used the day to make history, but also to send a message to Pep Guardiola, his future coach.
Álvarez is expected to undergo training with the Citizens in the summer, and Guardiola would like to keep him in the squad, especially in the position of the spike striker, as he needs to strengthen.
However, the arrival of Erling Haaland could set back the young Argentine’s growth a little, so it is unclear whether he will stay at the Etihad Stadium after all. However, 33 goals and 10 assists give Álvarez a good chance to make a name for himself in the Premier League champions’ squad.
