The Champions League final on Saturday night promised a big and interesting storyline. A historic giant in Inter Milan on one side, one of the best teams of recent years in Manchester City on the other.
Inter were certainly not expected to reach the Champions League final. Rather, it was expected to fight for the title again in Italy, only that it failed to do so. And it didn’t win the millionaire’s competition either.
It was Manchester City who confirmed a phenomenal season. After Pep Guardiola’s selection managed to win the league and the FA Cup, they also dominated the Champions League, which means only one thing. This is the second English team to win the legendary treble.
So far, only city rivals have managed it within England. Manchester United did it in 1999. Guardiola is responsible for the sensational achievement, he has now won the Champions League for the third time in his career, but he has been waiting a long time for this trophy.
The only goal of the match was scored by Spanish midfielder Rodri, when he scored in the 68th minute. Inter also had their chances, but Ederson made some great saves in goal.
Inter were very underrated, but managed to torment the English champion much more than expected before the match. It wasn’t enough to win.
The Citizens are experiencing the best era in the club’s history since Guardiola’s arrival and 2023 will be written in golden letters. Guardiola himself is the first coach to win the treble twice. The first time was back at Barcelona.
Guardiola joined Manchester City in the summer of 2016. Since then, he has already won 14 trophies. He has dominated the English league five times with the team, the League Cup four times, the FA Cup twice, the Community Shield twice and the Champions League once.
