Guardiola has broken another benchmark that proves his exceptionalism. But the competition is getting stronger!
Manchester City managed to beat Aston Villa 2-1 on Wednesday, allowing Pep Guardiola to celebrate his 150th Premier League win. Moreover, he reached this milestone the fastest of all coaches.
Manchester City defeated Aston Villa 2-1 on Wednesday and Pep Guardiola was able to celebrate his 150th Premier League win. Moreover, he reached this milestone the fastest of all coaches.
Manchester City are doing very well in the current season, thanks to their great form they have almost caught up with the leaders Chelsea, who are still only one point ahead of them. In the Champions League, they then managed a crucial duel with PSG and clearly dominate their Group A with 12 points.
So far, everything is going according to plan and Guardiola can be happy with the progress. Even more so when he notched up another record after his last win. This time it is the number of league wins, which he has achieved the fastest of any coach in Premier League history.
It took him just 204 games to reach that mark, which means his winning percentage is 74%, surpassing his old rival Jose Mourinho, who needed 230 games to reach the same number of wins.
The legendary duo of Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger then needed 247 and 258 games respectively for 150 league wins.
It is also interesting to note that the most wins under Guardiola were recorded by the Citizens in matches against Arsenal, Burnley and West Ham (10 wins). The biggest win then came in 2019 against Watford – 8: 0.
The third place in this statistic is about to be taken by Jurgen Klopp, who has 147 league wins to his credit currently, having coached 234 games so far. However, it must be added here that the Liverpool he took over certainly didn’t have the same quality as Manchester City when Guardiola started coaching them.
The German coach’s work must be appreciated all the more since he had to build his machine first. Moreover, last season he was caught in a disaster when virtually his entire defence was out of action for several months.
In the current season, however, both dominant units of recent seasons will find it very difficult as the other units are improving significantly. Currently, Chelsea dominate the Premier League, but Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United must be expected to rise significantly in the next few months.
We must also mention Newcastle, who will have great resources to build Manchester City. But of course, this will take time and it can be counted on that it will take 2-3 seasons before it can realistically fight for the title. For now, first and foremost, they need to save themselves in the top flight of England.
