The ATP 500-level tournament in Washington is slowly entering its final phase. The quarterfinals will bring a clash of two seeded tennis players. Grigor Dimitrov and Ugo Humbert. Who will be the favorite in this match?
Grigor Dimitrov (32 years old, 20th in the ATP rankings) and Ugo Humbert (25 years old, 36th in the ATP rankings) will face each other on the hard surface of the tournament in the US capital. Bulgarian Dimitrov reached the quarterfinals and equaled his best from 2013, while Frenchman Humbert is playing in Washington for the first time.
The form of both tennis players
Dimitrov has won 28 of his 41 matches this year. In February, his best was the semi-final of the indoor tournament in Rotterdam. He reached the final on clay in Geneva in May and also had a great showing at Wimbledon.
At the All England Club, among other things, he went smoothly over the American Tiafoe and found his opponent in the eighth round after a great battle with Holger Run. He won the first set against the young Dane, but the match was decided by two losses in the shortened games.
Humbert is also having a successful season. He has already played three finals, winning two of them. But all of them have been in challengers. The big success was the Frenchman’s progress to the semi-finals in Atlanta last week. Here he surprised, for example, by knocking out the Australian De Minaur.
If we look at the conquerors of both players, we find that Dimitrov has only been able to beat Alcaraz and Rune since the end of the clay court season. The Bulgarian tennis player won the remaining nine matches for himself.
Humbert in the same period finished on the racket of Ruusuvuori, Peniston, Kubler, Mannarin and Vukic. He is facing his seventh match in the last ten days.
Current Tournament and Matches
Dimitrov has not lost a set in Washington so far. He went without losing a set against McDonald (60th on the ATP ranking) and Ruusuvuori (55th on the ATP). The Frenchman needed three sets in his match against Kokkinakis (86th on the ATP), while he handled Watanuki (99th on the ATP) smoothly.
Both tennis players understandably have positive statistics in Washington. It is worth noting that although Humbert produces significantly more aces, the more experienced tennis player has a higher success rate in holding his serve. Dimitrov has lost only one game in which he served in the four sets played.
Dimitrov has won both previous meetings with Humbert. Their matches were played in 2019 and 2020. Dimitrov in particular did not perform as well then as he did this year.
In conclusion..
Dimitrov will be the favorite of the match. This is despite the fact that he is facing a tennis player who is also in good form. In fact, Bulharov’s has been close to life in recent months. Dimitrov is on his way to rewrite his best in the US capital by reaching the semi-finals.
