The tournament in Washington is the biggest hard court tennis event to date after the end of the grass season. Among the highest seeded players there are Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and also Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian tennis player will face Finland’s Ruusuvuori in the eighth round.
Grigor Dimitrov is currently ranked 20th in the ATP rankings. His eight years younger opponent is 35 places lower. Bulgarian Dimitrov is a former world number three and his performances this year are close to what he showed in his prime.
This year’s form
Dimitrov has won 27 of his 40 matches played this year. In February, he played the semi-finals of an indoor tournament in Rotterdam. He reached the final on clay in Geneva in May and also had a great showing at Wimbledon.
At the All England Club, he got past the American Tiafoe smoothly and only found his opponent in the eighth round after a great fight with Holger Run. He won the first set against the young Dane, but was broken by two losses in the shortened games.
Emil Ruusuvuori’s ultimate goal is the quarter-finals of the Masters in Miami. He hasn’t had much success since then. Except perhaps for a win over Italy’s Sinner in June on the grass in Hertogenbosch. Since then, the Finn has only experienced the joy of winning at the current tournament in Washington.
Current tournament
Ruusuvuori has two wins in Washington. He defeated both the Frenchman Lestienne and the Japanese Nishioka. However, neither of these players are in great form. Against the Frenchman, the Finn needed two sets and against the Japanese he needed three.
Dimitrov, after a free draw in the first round, beat American McDonald in the second round. The latter is a superior player on the hard surface this year, he was able to beat, for example, Nadal or Berrettini. The Bulgarian defeated him in sets 7:6, 6:2.
Dimitrov should be able to handle the match against the Finnish tennis player. After all, he has done it twice recently. He didn’t even allow Ruusuvuori a set at the French Open or at the Queen’s Club.
At the moment, the Bulgarian seems to be in constant and very good form and in the upcoming match we cannot expect any major complications in his progress to the next stages.
