Griezmann slips on penalty, Atlético still reach Cup semi-finals

Atlético reached the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey, beating Sevilla 1-0 at home. The long conquest was started by a missed penalty, followed by two disallowed goals. Memphis Depay scored the regular goal.

Atlético started actively, Álvaro Morata headed in the fifth minute but only hit the centre of the goal. On the other side, Isaac Romero tried his luck from inside the box, but the red and white defence knocked the ball away for a corner kick.

In the 24th minute, Marcao fouled in the Atlético box and Madrid took a penalty kick. Antoine Griezmann took the ball but missed a step, slipped and sent the ball high over the bar. A great chance was wasted.

In the 31st minute, Morata got a header, this time heading just over the visitors’ goal. Rodrigo de Paul was also unsuccessful with his shot. The Argentine world champion fired in from a direct kick, but he also just missed Orjan Nyland’s goal.

The match was scoreless. After the change of sides, Atlético’s dominance continued, with Griezmann again heading over in a good position. The active Frenchman finally scored in the 60th minute, but this time his shot was disallowed for offside.

The same was true eight minutes later for Memphis Depay, the goal was also disallowed for offside. In the 79th minute, the Dutch sniper scored a regular goal, this time from a centre by Angel Correa.

Sevilla went on the offensive after the goal, with Sergio Ramos equalising, but in a good position he shot over. On the other side, Samuel Lino had a decision to make, but the Sevilla goalkeeper made an excellent save.

Just when it looked like the game was decided, the referee awarded a penalty to the visitors. However, after watching the replay, he called it off and the game was over. The home favourite is now through to the top four teams in the Copa del Rey.
