The WRC had its tenth event of the season on the schedule from Thursday to Sunday, namely the Greek Acropolis Rally. The drivers of the Hyundai Shell Mobis WRT team dominated the event and thus scored important points in the drivers’ championship. Martin Prokop finished in fourteenth position.
The Greek Rallye Acropolis was dominated by Thierry Neuville, who had already taken the lead on Saturday thanks to the retirement of nine-time champion Sébastien Loeb. The legendary Frenchman was let down by his own car when he pulled out of the tenth round of the season due to technical problems.
It was Neuville’s first win of the season, and the 16th of his career so far.
Hyundai, however, can celebrate its third consecutive victory. The Belgian’s teammate Ott Tänak dominated the races in Finland and Belgium.
The Estonian driver also finished on the podium for the fourth time in a row, and with Kalle Rovanpera’s unambiguous first half of the season, the title fight may be dramatised after all.
While Tänak is 53 points behind the championship leader with just three rounds to go in the 2022 season, the form of Hyundai and their drivers has been absolutely superb of late.
Although Rovanperä was able to continue the rally after hitting a tree on Saturday, he picked up a significant loss and finished the Acropolis Rally in 15th place. Neuvill and Tänak were then joined on the podium by Dani Sordo, leaving Hyundai with a podium all to itself.
Martin Prokop finished eighth in the WRC2 category, losing an abysmal eight minutes to the winner Lindholm.
