Karolina Pliskova scored her first win at this year’s Champions Tournament after a big drama. In a thrilling match, she defeated Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza 2: 1 in sets, with the deciding set being decided by a tie break.
Karolina Pliskova, the tournament’s number three, played her opening match at the Tournament of Champions in Guadalajara, Mexico, against number four Garbiñe Muguruza.
Pliskova entered the match with a great start. She broke her opponent’s serve on the first serve and quickly took a 2:0 lead in the first set.
However, after that came a break in the form of two break points for Muguruza, who quickly turned the result to her side. The Spaniard kept her one break advantage until the end of the first set and was able to celebrate her 6:4 first set win.
The second set started the same way as the first, with the only difference that Pliskova managed to confirm her break. And when the Czech tennis player added another break towards the end of the set, she easily went on to win the second set 6:2. She did not allow her opponent a single break point.
The winner had to be decided in the third set. There were only two break points at the beginning of the set. Otherwise, both players had no problems on serve except for Muguruza’s serve in the tenth game. There she offered two match points to Pliskova, but the Czech was unable to take advantage of any of them. Thus, the third set was sent to a tie break.
It was quite strange. In it, both players were completely burnt out on serve, as they managed to win only three points on their serve out of fourteen balls. In the end, Karolina Pliskova was luckier, winning the tie break 8::6.
In the next match, Karolina Pliskova will play Kontaveit of Estonia. She defeated Barbora Krejcikova in the first match.
