The Czech tennis players are progressing through the tournament in Dubai very well indeed. Muchova has already knocked out Bernarda Pera and Sorana Cirstea in the previous rounds, and now she has served world number nine Bencic.
She has already dominated two tournaments this year and it is no wonder that the Czech player entered the match as an underdog. The subsequent course of the match was all the more surprising.
Already in the first set she defeated Bencic 6:1, while according to WTA data the first set lasted only 33 minutes. The second set was much more even, but Muchová entered the second set better and more active.
And the final result? The native of Olomouc successfully managed this set as well, defeating her opponent 6::4.
Another Czech, Pliskova, also advanced, winning her match against Ukrainian Kalinina. As in the case of Muchova’s duel with Bencic, Pliskova also entered this match as an underdog.
However, the match lasted 168 minutes and it was a very even battle. Muchova defeated the world No. 18 in the first set 7:5, but the second set was won by Kalinina after a tough fight, 6:7.
The match did not have to go to the third set at all. However, Pliskova failed to take advantage of two match points in the eleventh game of the set and lost her serve.
She didn’t have to be sorry anyway. Pliskova clearly dominated the third set 6:2 and brought the match to a victorious end! In the quarter-finals she will meet Iga Swiatek of Poland, who lost only three games at the tournament in Dubai. It will be an even tougher battle for Pliskova.
