All fears allayed! At least for now. Anyway, the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit will continue to be raced. Formula 1 has extended its contract with Belgium until the 2025 season.
It’s one of those traditional circuits that we all love, and one that should definitely not be missing from the Formula 1 calendar. The iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit has seen a lot, having hosted the Queen of Motorsport since the inception of the official World Championship.
The Spa-Francorchamps circuit is the longest in the entire racing calendar (7,044 metres) and has hosted 56 grand prix events. Its first winner was the famous and legendary Juan Manuel Fangio, who won here a total of three times.
However, Michael Schumacher still has the most victories at this circuit (6), with the equally famous driver Ayrton Senna in second position with five wins. Ferrari is the most successful team at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit with 18 championships.
Since then, the track has undergone various changes and has offered not only plenty of exciting racing, but also major, albeit fatal, accidents. This has, after all, been the reason for the constant reflection on whether the Belgian Grand Prix is really safe, the Eau Rouge section being a big problem.
In recent years, the circuit has undergone significant infrastructure development, including an increase in capacity by 10,000 spectators with the addition of two new grandstands, as well as an expanded range of entertainment features for fans.
This year’s Belgian Grand Prix was attended by 380,000 people over the weekend. Spa-Francorchamps is rightly one of the most legendary and traditional circuits not only in F1, but in motorsport as a whole.
Spa is synonymous with Formula 1
“Spa is synonymous with Formula 1. It’s one of the circuits that was here in the first season of F1 and is very popular with both fans and drivers. I am very happy that we can extend our cooperation until 2025,” said Stefano Domenicali in an official statement.
“The promoter has made great strides in the last few years, both for the fans and in terms of infrastructure. The work between all parties involved continues with a clear focus on ensuring safe and exciting races. I would like to thank the promoter and the Walloon Government for their continued support,” added the F1 President and CEO.
