Jack Grealish is far from shining as many expected after his transfer from Aston Villa to Manchester City. But he has managed something unprecedented in the marketing department, according to The Athletic. He is to join forces with a prestigious fashion brand.
When Grealish joined the reigning Premier League champions last year, his fans expected him to deliver quality performances on the pitch. However, he has only scored twice in 20 games in the league and has not yet fulfilled his potential.
Manchester City paid £100 million for him in the summer, which still seems like an exorbitant amount to many fans. He’s giving much more back to his employer on the marketing front, where, as the most expensive British footballer in history, he also commands a high price tag.
Big sports brands already have their major faces, with Nike having Cristiano Ronaldo under contract, Brazilian magician Neymar signing with Puma and Lionel Messi with Adidas. But Grealish has stepped outside the sports bubble.
English sports site The Athletic has come forward with the news that the Birmingham native will soon be unveiled as an ambassador for fashion brand Gucci.
He would thus be the first athlete to become the face of the global brand. Journalist David Ornstein claims that the official introduction is only a matter of time.
It should be noted – this is not the first time that Gucci has tried to expand into the world of sports, or esports for that matter. In 2020, the company teamed up with the Fnatic team, with whom it released a limited edition watch. However, the fashion brand is expected to enter into a longer-term collaboration with Grealish.
Fans will see whether it will start to thrive on the pitch on Sunday, April 10 at 17:30. Manchester City will welcome their direct rival for the title – Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.
