Jiří Lehečka is probably having a breakthrough season. He finished 2022 ranked 81st in the ATP rankings and on Monday he will move up to 36th place. This will once again improve his career high.
Jiří Lehečka is probably having a breakthrough season. He finished 2022 ranked 81st in the ATP rankings and on Monday he will move up to 36th place. This will once again improve his career high.
In the 2023 calendar year, Jiří Lehečka has already won eighteen competitions. His greatest success was the Australian Open quarter-final, in which he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Before that, however, he had defeated Coric (6::3, 6::3, 6::3), Eubanks (6::4, 6::4, 3::6, 6::3), Norrie (6::7, 6::3, 3::6, 6::1, 6::4) and Auger-Aliassime (4::6, 6::3, 7::6, 7::6). Until then, he had not won a match at a Grand Slam tournament.
Lehečka was able to build on this success in the Davis Cup, where he won two important points for the Czech team. On Portuguese clay he found a recipe for Nun Borges and Joao Sousa.
At the Doha event, he defeated Andrey Rublev, among others. He was even within reach of the final, but he was unable to use even one of the five match balls offered to Murray and lost the match.
Two victories at the ATP Masters in Miami are also worth mentioning. It seems that the Czech number one also managed the transition to clay courts.
In Monte Carlo, the tennis player working with Tomas Berdych defeated both Ruusuvuori and Dimitrov. Only Taylor Fritz was above his strength.
Thanks to this, Lehecka will move up to 36th place in Monday’s ATP rankings with 1033 points, which will be his new career high. Until now, his best ranking was 37th at the end of February this year.
If we look at the rankings for 2023, we will find the native of Mladá Boleslav in 15th place. If he continues to shrug off the same form, he may even think about participating in the Tournament of Champions.
