Young French super-talent and member of the Sauber Driving Academy Théo Pourchaire finally gets his chance in Formula 1! He will replace the team’s Finnish number one Valtteri Bottas in the first free practice session at the US Grand Prix in Austin.
In previous years, it has been a major problem for young drivers to even try out a Formula 1 car due to a lack of opportunities.
However, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has made a change for this season. And that is that each team must arrange for a young driver to take part in at least the first two practice sessions during the season.
This means that every team must guarantee a chance to a driver who has started less than two Grands Prix.
It will then be up to the teams during this season in which Grand Prix they commit to this step. In the USA, Alfa Romeo will therefore take advantage of this opportunity by fielding Frenchman Pourchaire in the first practice session at the Austin circuit.
He will replace Valtteri Bottas in the Italian team’s cockpit and thus make his debut in the queen of motorsport!
“It’s a dream come true and I want to thank the Alfa Romeo F1 team for putting their trust in me and giving me this amazing opportunity. I’m looking forward to being on track and giving it my all. The maximum in preparation that the team needs for the US Grand Prix,” said Pourchaire in an interview with F1.
The French racer has been with the ART Grand Prix team this year and is currently second in the drivers’ championship with 164 points. He will serve as a reserve driver for Alfa Romeo next year.
