Grealish fires back at Souness’ critic: I don’t know what his problem is with me. He’s always got to talk about me
Jack Grealish is a highly speculated name in the islands. Manchester City paid 100 million euros for him last year, but at least statistically the midfielder with the likable style hasn’t caught on in the Citizens’ game yet. And so he faces quite a lot of criticism.
Jack Grealish is a highly speculated name in the islands. Manchester City paid 100 million euros for him last year, but at least statistically the midfielder with the likable style hasn’t caught on in the Citizens’ game yet. And so he faces quite a lot of criticism.
If you judge only by statistics, you cannot consider Grealish’s engagement at Citizens as a success so far. Last season, he couldn’t work his way permanently into the starting lineup and in 26 Premier League games he recorded a record of only 3+3. He added two goals in the FA Cup and his 1+1 record helped the Citizens to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
That is, of course, a poor record for an offensive midfielder or winger. But it’s not all about numbers, Grealish puts in a pretty solid performance when he comes on and even Pep Guardiola praises him.
However, the pundits in England have been stitching up Grealish a lot. Mostly Graeme Souness, former Tottenham, Liverpool and Rangers player.
“Jack Grealish is a good footballer. But for me he is not a great player. He’s a good player who has had a big move, but he hasn’t confirmed that at Man City yet. At Aston Villa he was the most fouled player in the Premier League.
If you are the most fouled player, you have too many touches and the reason you have too many touches is because you don’t see the game fast enough. I can see why people think he’s better than he actually is, because he runs the ball nicely and can lift you out of your seat. But that’s not enough,” Souness said of Grealish over the weekend.
What’s his problem?
Before the Nations League duels against Germany and Italy, Grealish was asked about this criticism at a press conference and did not hold back too much.
“I don’t know what his problem is with me. He keeps saying things about me, but I try not to read too much into it,” Grealish replied.
“It’s difficult when he’s on Sky Sports and he has to say things all the time. He was obviously a great player and won a lot of things, but I don’t know why he has to keep talking about me or what his problem is with me,” the Manchester City footballer added.
“Today all people have something to say, whether on social media or pundits on TV. It’s part of the game. It’s the biggest sport in the world, everyone wants to talk about it. But I watch my games and I’m quite critical of myself and I know that in some games I didn’t give my best performance,” Grealish concluded.
