Mario Götze was supposed to be one of the best footballers on the planet, quite possibly the winner of the Ballon d’Or, the Germans took him as their successor to Lionel Messi. He achieved several successes in his career, but he certainly did not fulfil his potential. How is he doing now in the Netherlands?

Already at the age of 17, Mario Götze began to gradually integrate into the Borussia Dortmund team, developing into one of the biggest stars of the squad and one of the greatest talents in world football.

He helped Borussia to two league titles. In the memorable 2012/13 season, when Dortmund reached the Champions League final, he was one of the key links in Jürgen Klopp’s squad.

His performances earned him an engagement at Bayern Munich, who had just bought him for €37 million in 2013. Although Götze enjoyed three Bundesliga titles with the Bavarian outfit, won the Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup, the engagement rather didn’t work out.

He was suffering from health problems. However, no one can take one thing away from him. He will always be a German hero, as he shot Germany to the World Cup title in 2014 with the winning goal in the final.

In 2016, he returned to Dortmund again, but there he was unable to build on his previous successful stint, mainly due to a lack of playing time, but this was again due to health problems. But his comeback cannot be called a failure, he played his part.

After four years, he parted ways with the Westphalian side again, surprisingly signing for Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in October 2020. He himself claimed that he would probably only spend one season in the Eredivisie to reboot himself, but he is still at the club and has a contract until 2024.

And how is he actually doing? Certainly not badly. If he is not injured, he is one of the important links in the team. He is capable of being a difference maker in important matches, scoring 17 goals and adding 17 assists during 69 competitive games in a PSV jersey.

With his creativity, Götze is one of the best players in the competition in terms of chances created. According to some foreign media, the 29-year-old German is experiencing a football renaissance and has benefited from his departure to a less watched environment.

The 2014 world champion has already managed to win the Dutch Super Cup with the Eindhoven side, and this season he is still fighting for the Dutch league title with his team.

Even before signing at PSV, he stated that he didn’t want to end his career without winning the Champions League, however, it is questionable whether he will ever actually succeed. Although Götze has certainly not fulfilled his potential, he can be satisfied with his career, having won 14 major trophies.
