The vast majority of matches in the first round of the Conference Europa League group stage are played on Thursday, but Slavia’s opponents played each other on Tuesday. Maccabi played Feyenoord without a goal.

The August draw gave Slavia a tough group. Feyenoord, Union Berlin and Maccabi Haifa was almost the toughest possible combination that Jindrich Trpišovský’s charges could have faced.

The Slavs’ group (as well as Group A) got underway on Tuesday when Maccabi Haifa and Feyenoord Rotterdam, the teams from the fourth and second baskets, faced each other.

The match itself was not very interesting. The visitors were in poor form and had few chances, Tjaronn Chery could have secured the lead for the home team, but his shot ended up on the crossbar.

When the referee’s whistle blew to signal the end of the match, two zeros were next to each other, but looking at the stats it’s not too surprising. Both teams combined had only four shots on goal.

The division of points plays into the hands of Slavia, for whom Feyenoord is probably the biggest competitor in the fight for first place in the group. The second advancing team will play one extra double playoff match, the winner going straight to the eighth round.

Slavia will enter the new competition on Thursday when they welcome German side Union Berlin at home.
