You just can’t stop age. And that’s true in the football world too. There are several goalkeepers in the nomination for the ongoing championship in Germany, for whom this year’s EURO is probably the last one in their national career.

  • Apparently, several goalkeeping icons are currently experiencing their last EURO
  • The list includes former Spartan Florin Nita
  • Turkey’s Mert Günok is a pleasant surprise at this year’s Euros

Germany – Neuer, Baumann, Ter Stegen

One of football’s most experienced trio of goalkeepers ever has been called up for this year’s championship by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann. The oldest is Manuel Neuer (38), followed by Oliver Baumann (34) and thirty-two-year-old Marc-André Ter Stegen. It is clear that the next championship in 2028 will probably not involve either of them anymore.

Hungary – Gulácsi, Dibusz, Szappanos

The Hungarian coach also bet on experience in the nomination. The thirty-four-year-old Gulácsi was backed up by the younger pair of Dibusz and Szappanos. If the Hungarian national team qualifies for the championship in four years’ time, they will enter with a trio of brand new goalkeepers.

Switzerland – Yann Sommer

Thirty-five-year-old Sommer is the clear leader at the ongoing championship. He has kept one clean sheet in the four games he has played so far and has ensured his team’s qualification to the quarter-finals. At club level, he is playing for Inter Milan, where he transferred from Bayern Munich in 2023.

Scotland – Zander Clark

The now thirty-two year old goalkeeper did not get between the three posts for Scotland at the championship. He has played a total of four games for the national team and has spent his entire career to date with Scottish sides. The Glasgow native currently plays for Heart of Midlothian.

Albania – Etrit Berisha

Like Scotland’s Zander Clark, thirty-five year old Etrit Berisha didn’t get an opportunity in the championship match. He has played eighty games for the national team, keeping thirty-five clean sheets. After the end of his contract at Empoli in Italy, he is without a contract.

Denmark – Kasper Schmeichel

The son of the legendary Peter Schmeichel is still a mainstay of the Danish national team at the age of thirty-seven. He achieved his greatest success in the jersey of Leicester of England, with whom he won the Premier League in 2016. In addition, he won the FA Cup and the English Super Cup there. His most recent stint was at Anderlecht in Belgium.

Slovenia – Vid Belec

Despite being the clear number one in the Slovenian national team, Jan Oblak is sporadic in the goal, yet he has made twenty-one national team starts. Since July 2022, he has been a member of the Cypriot Apoel squad.

Austria – Heinz Lindner

Thirty-three-year-old Heinz Lindner also played the role of substitute goalkeeper for Austria at the championship. The native of Linz is a tribal player for Swiss side Sion. He was last a guest of Belgian side Union SG.

Poland – Wojciech Szczęsny & Lukasz Skorupski

According to the latest reports, the legendary Wojciech Szczęsny will also put an end to his rich national team career. At club level he has played for Arsenal, Brentford and AS Roma. Since 2018, he has been a stable member of Juventus’ starting line-up.

Thirty-three-year-old Lukasz Skorupski is unlikely to start at the next European Championship. The player of Italian Bologna has played eleven matches for the national team so far, in which he kept three clean sheets.

Romania – Florin Nita

In 2018, he was brought into the squad by the management of Sparta Prague. In their jersey, he appeared in a total of 110 matches, leaving forty-one of them unbeaten. From Sparta, he was also a guest in Pardubice. After the end of his time in the Czech Republic, he headed to Gaziantep in Turkey. The 37-year-old goalkeeper played all the matches at this year’s championship.

Slovakia – Martin Dúbravka

Thirty-five-year-old Dúbravka also has a past with Sparta Prague. The Žilina-born player first had a taste of the Czech Republic in Liberec, from where he went to Sparta. He attracted attention with his stable and reliable performances and was snapped up by Newcastle in England in 2018. During his time in England, he was also a guest at Manchester United.

Georgia – Giorgi Loria

Thirty-eight-year-old goalkeeper of the Cypriot side Aradippou has made it to Georgia’s final nomination. Even though he didn’t feature in any of the games, it was certainly one of the great experiences of his football career.

Portugal – Rui Patricio

Legendary goalkeeper for the Portuguese national team, who has 108 starts at the age of thirty-six. His career is intrinsically linked to Sporting Portugal, where he has already racked up an impressive 462 starts. He has also played for AS Roma and Wolverhampton in England.

Turkey – Mert Günok

Among the pleasant surprises of this year’s championship can also be included the thirty-five-year-old goalkeeper in the service of Besiktas. Not only did he help his team to advance to the knockout stage of the championship, he also defended a one-goal lead with a fantastic save in the eighth-final against Austria, and thanks to him Turkey will taste the quarter-final fight.
