Ángel Correa performed a truly incredible feat in the 26th round of La Liga. In the showpiece match between Atlético Madrid and Villarreal, he sent the defending champions into the lead in the 10th minute with a wonderful strike from the middle of the park.

He started the interesting duel at the Estádio de la Cerámica in the best possible way. The usually reliable Dani Parejo failed in his crossing, his pass was intercepted by Ángel Correa in the middle of the pitch and he did something no one had counted on.

The Argentine striker stepped up and beat Geronimo Rulli in the Villarreal goal with a beautiful shot from the half-circle.

But then Villarreal stepped on the gas. In the 23rd minute, they won a penalty, but it was not converted by goalkeeper Gerard Moreno. Two minutes later, the yellow submarine was indeed celebrating a goal, only for the joy to be taken away from the home side by VAR, which found a hand in the previous play. However, Unaia Emery’s charges didn’t give up and actually equalised in the next 4 minutes when Pau Torres scored.

Alberto Moreno completed the turnaround in the 58th minute, but Villarreal’s lead didn’t last long as Kondogbia equalised 9 minutes later to make it 2-2. The latter was sent off in the 92nd minute for a second yellow card, but nothing else of significance happened in the final match of the round and the two teams parted with a point for a 2-2 draw.

Neither team, however, was helped by the division of points. Atlético could have overtaken third-placed Betis, but they remained one point behind in fourth place, and were caught up by Real Sociedad, who have the same number of points in fifth place.

Villarreal, on the other hand, could have caught up with Rayo Vallecano and Barcelona in the battle for sixth place and therefore the Conference League. This leaves them two points behind Rayo and three behind Barcelona.
