This fairy tale has no end. Girona were losing 0:2 to Almería after the national break and seemed to have run out of breath. But they came back, scored 5 goals and caught up with Real Madrid at the top of the table.
This fairy tale has no end. Girona were losing 0-2 to Almería after the national break and seemed to have run out of breath. But they came back, scored 5 goals and caught up with Real Madrid at the top of the table.
Before the break Girona beat Cadiz 1: 0 and held on to second place behind Real Madrid with a difference of 2 points. And given that Los Blancos only drew with Sevilla 1: 1 on Saturday, Girona had a unique opportunity to match Real at the top of the table.
But they may have missed that opportunity. Leo Baptistao opened the scoring against Almería in the second minute and in the 24th minute the same player added a second goal.
Girona were a bit shaken, as apart from the duel with Real Madrid, they have never lost by two goals this season.
But at the end of the first half, a big storm came. In the 37th minute Iván Martin reduced the score to 1:2, two minutes later Artem Dovbyk equalised and in the 43rd minute the Ukrainian goalscorer scored his second goal to make it 3:2.
Savio added an insurance goal in the second half and in the 85th minute captain Stuani completed the scoring for the final 5:2. Girona now tied on points with Real Madrid.
It has even more goals scored than Los Blancos (24-21) but also more goals conceded (13-7) and so Real Madrid is still first by a score.
But the latter goes to Barcelona next week for El Clásico, while Girona will welcome at home the troubled Celta Vigo. And with either the first or the third team in the table, or maybe both teams losing points, there is a decent chance for Girona to consolidate their place among the elite.
