Girona is no longer leading La Liga. Joselu downed Getafe

Real Madrid won Thursday’s La Liga match 2-0 against Getafe. Both goals were scored by the cannonballer Joselu, who returned to the White Ballet in the summer after many years. Thanks to him, the team from the Spanish capital is back in first place.

As expected, Real Madrid were active and had their first big chance in the ninth minute, Joselu’s shot flew well but ended up on the crossbar. Three minutes after that, Vinícius tried a cross, but David Soria made a great save.

In the 14th minute the visitors were already celebrating, a Lucas Vazquez centre was cleared by striker Joselu with a header. From that point on, the favourite retreated slightly, letting the opponents play and threatened again in the 28th minute, but Luka Modric’s attempt missed the target by a wide margin.

Six minutes later, Federico Valverde fired from the edge of the box, but it just missed the Getafe net. The active Joselu continued to be hungry, this time not challenging goalkeeper Soria in the 39th minute. Real Madrid went for a second shot late in the half.

However, it failed to do so and the match went into the cabins with a 0:1 scoreline. After the change of sides, the home coach made three changes in the line-up and Getafe’s activity went up. The highlight was Mason Greenwood’s finish which ended up on the right post.

The good passage of the outsider continued with two inaccurate attempts, in the first case it was provided by Greenwood, then by Diego Rico. On the other hand, the other side celebrated, in the 56th minute Joselu got through for the second time in the match after a pass from Vinícius.

Vinícius also wanted to add to the statistics as a goal scorer, but in the 63rd minute he only hit the assist of the goal. By the end of the 70th minute the visitors threatened twice more, first Valverde missed, then Vinícius shot again in the middle.

In the end, Getafe tried to do something about the situation, Borja Mayoral and Greenwood came closest to reducing the deficit, but neither of them succeeded. Real Madrid returned to the first place in the table after winning 2: 0, two points ahead of Girona. Getafe are tenth.
