Giovinazzi returns to Formula 1! He will drive two practice sessions with the Haas team

Antonio Giovinazzi lost his place after the 2021 season, when he and teammate Kimi Räikkönen were replaced by Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Kuan-yu in the Alfa Romeo stable. He will return to the track in a Formula 1 car thanks to Haas. He has been able to take part in two practice sessions, namely the Italian GP and the US GP.
The Italian driver has had a busy season in Formula E. He hasn’t scored a point for Dragon Penske Racing and hasn’t even finished more than half of the races.
Giovinazzi’s stats in Formula One are much better. Between 2019 and 2021, he took part in 61 Grands Prix, scoring 21 points in the slow Alfa Romeo monopoly.
Giovinazzi is Ferrari’s reserve driver, along with Mick Schumacher, and the Maranello-based stable understandably wants the Italian to try out the new generation of formulae. He will be better prepared if he has to be called into action.
The 28-year-old already has experience with Haas. In 2017, he took part in seven practice sessions in a Haas VF-17.
Haas boss Günther Steiner has a positive view of the Italian driver’s return. “We were already in a similar situation with Antonio and Ferrari in 2017. The big difference is that now Antonio has several years of experience and will give us better feedback in Italy and the U.S.” he told Formula 1.
Due to sporting regulations, Haas, like every team, has to release its car twice more in the first practice session for a driver who has not participated in more than two Grands Prix.
The main candidate is Haas reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi, who has just raced twice in 2020, when he filled in for Romain Grosjean.
