It was supposed to be one of the candidates for seventh place, yet Aston Villa are struggling in the new Premier League season. After the loss at Sellhurst Park, there has been criticism of coach and Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard.
A lot was expected from Aston Villa before the season, especially because none of their mainstays left, Philippe Coutinho permanently strengthened the club and other star names like stopper Diego Carlos and midfielder Boubacar Kamara arrived.
Already the first round was a big disappointment, when the Villans fell 0:2 at Bournemouth, the biggest relegation candidate. After that they managed to win 2-1 at home against Everton, but in the third round they fell for the second time away.
Ollie Watkins opened the scoring against Crystal Palace, but the home side equalised before half-time and turned the game completely around in the second half thanks to a penalty. Aston Villa were worse and deservedly went to Birmingham with nothing.
Criticism of head coach Gerrard was unleashed on social media after the final whistle. He has long been unable to assemble a stable eleven from the league’s eighth most expensive squad that will beat teams like Bournemouth and Crystal Palace. Some even accuse him of playing a 4-3-3 formation.
“Gerrard out. This project is too big for him. We will never break the top ten of the table and we will never think about cups under him. He doesn’t have a ‘B’ plan, the same tactics week in week out. It’s easy to play against us, it’s embarrassing,” reads one of the most liked comments on Aston Villa’s Facebook page from fan Stephen.
“Let’s be honest, the only way to Aston Villa’s success is through an excellent, really excellent coach. You can spend another 400million but it will be useless if the person in charge doesn’t know how to use it,” agreed supporter Elliot.
Gerrard has broken his own first leg in his seat and if it doesn’t work he will fall off it completely and may look for a new engagement. In a week against West Ham he must win, even though it will be extremely difficult, because after that he plays Arsenal and Manchester City.
