Germany dominates the Basketball World Cup for the first time in history, Serbia takes silver

The German national basketball team won the 2023 World Cup by defeating Serbia 83:77 in the final match. The Germans went through the entire tournament without a single loss and are enjoying their first triumph in history. In the bronze medal match, the Canadians beat the Americans 127:118 after extra time.

The Germans recorded a historic success with a close win over Serbia

The final match started better for the Serbian team, who won the first quarter 26:23, but the Germans managed to equalize by halftime, winning the second quarter 24:21.

The third quarter was a turning point for the final match, as the Germans developed a big lead during the quarter, which the Serbs could do nothing with. After a score of 22:10 in the third, Germany started the final quarter with a twelve-point lead.

Serbia did not want to give up and fought back at the end, but the score of 20:14 after the fourth quarter was not enough to reverse the result. Germany won the final 83:77 and deservedly won the gold medals, while Serbia will take home the silver.

Both teams deserve a pat on the back, as neither was expected to be among the favourites for the tournament, yet both Serbia and Germany made it to the final. The Germans went through the whole tournament without a single defeat and beat the USA team in the semi-finals. The Serbs beat Canada in the same tournament.

Germany’s biggest success so far at the World Basketball Cup was the bronze medal in 2002. This year, the Germans reached the final for the first time in their history and immediately became world champions.

The Serbs are much better off in terms of medal success. Although they have only two silver medals to their credit in their separate history (2014 and 2023), Yugoslavia has been world champion five times (1970, 1978, 1990, 1998 and 2002), taking silver three times and bronze twice.
