German media slammed Viktoria Plzen: Champions League is supposed to be the toughest competition in the world, for Bayern it was a warm-up

Bayern Munich’s match with Viktoria Plzeň resembled a cat and mouse fight. The Bavarian players easily passed through the Czech champion’s defence and deservedly scored five goals. Even the German media noticed Viktoria’s poor performance, but they did not leave a dry thread on Plzeň.
Even at the start of the match, it was clear that the fans in the Allianz Arena could not expect an even battle. Bayern were rolling their Czech opponents and soon Leroy Sané scored.
The pressure continued, with Serge Gnabry and Sadio Mané scoring in the first half. The second half was more relaxed, with Sané increasing the score to 4:0 and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scoring the fifth and final goal.
Fans were particularly noting the poor performance of Victoria, who simply did not keep up. “This match in what is supposed to be the toughest competition in the world was at best a warm-up for Bayern before Saturday’s showpiece game in Dortmund,” wrote the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
“It was a shooting festival. Bayern gave the Pilsen outsiders no chance and completely dismantled them in their own stadium. Ahead of the expected match against Dortmund, coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team came very close to qualifying for the knockout stage of the Champions League,” said the Münchner Merkur website.
It is hardly surprising how the match is perceived in Germany. Bayern often run over their opponents by a bigger margin, but in the Champions League, different matches are generally expected. Even the Victorians themselves cannot be happy about the matches.
“The ruthlessly efficient Munich side, with two-goal scorer Leroy Sane, did not give their sparring partner from Plzeň the slightest chance in a 5:0 win. A clear signal to Borussia – they are ready for Saturday’s game,” wrote the Sky Sport editor.
Viktoria now have the second half of their fixtures ahead of them, first at home to Bayern, then travelling to Milan to take on Inter and finally at home to Barcelona.
