Will we see the German Champions League final? Active Bayern legend Manuel Neuer hopes so, even though both Bundesliga sides have a very tough opponent. In that case, the Munich giant has to knock out Real Madrid and Dortmund has to knock out Paris Saint-Germain.

On Tuesday and Wednesday evening, the opening matches of the semi-finals of the current Champions League season are scheduled. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid will face each other in the first semi-final.

If Thomas Tuchel’s charges want to advance further and experience the German final in the world’s most prestigious club competition for the first time in years, they need to get the best possible result at home heading into the rematch at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The same goes for Borussia Dortmund, who for a change will welcome title-winning Paris Saint-Germain at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday night. Both German sides would like to make their fans happy before the European Championship. And they will do just that in the form of Der Klassiker in the Champions League final.

The last time the two rivals met in the Champions League final was in the 2012/13 season, when Bayern beat Dortmund 2-1 and won the Eared Cup for the second time this millennium. However, the fans waited until the 60th minute for the first goal when Mario Mandzukic scored.

Eight minutes later, Ilkay Gündogan equalised and in the 89th minute Arjen Robben made the decisive breakthrough for Bayern. In the semi-finals, it was Dortmund who knocked out Real Madrid, while the Munich club clearly beat Barcelona.

The German final? I hope so, Neuer thinks

Mats Hummels of BVB remembers the Champions League final, while Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer of Bayern remember it. And it was the latter who recalled Der Klassiker from the 2012/13 season.

“Of course, there aren’t many players from that time who are still playing. But Thomas and I still remember how great it was. Now it’s time to throw everything away to relive it,” Neuer told Prime Video, whose words are also quoted by Get Germany Football News.

Likewise, Neuer mentioned that it is “very good for German football that there are two teams in the semi-finals”. However, if Bayern and Dortmund reach the final, then the Bundesliga can be considered the best league in the world.

“Everyone knows Real Madrid. It’s a great team and the duels between Bayern and Real Madrid are more or less the biggest matches you can get. The whole football world is looking forward to it. We have to be at our best in both games and give everything on the pitch to get to the final,” Neuer added.
