Gerard Piqué has asked for the rescheduling of the Spain national team match. He wanted to watch the Davis Cup with Shakira
More footage has been leaked, accusing Gerard Piqué of match-fixing. Not about the final result, but he once tried to reschedule the start of a Spain national team match. He had planned to watch a tennis match with his then-partner Shakira.
More footage has been leaked, accusing Gerard Piqué of match-fixing. Not about the final result, but he once tried to reschedule the start of a Spain national team match. He had planned to watch a tennis match with his then partner Shakira.
The Barcelona defender asked for a favour from the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Antonio Rubiales. “I see here Monday’s match between Spain and Romania, to be played on November 18. The Davis Cup starts that day in Madrid. Shakira is singing at the opening, it’s going to be a crazy show and in the afternoon there will be matches,” Gerard Piqué said at the time.
The football match was to be held at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, which belongs to Atlético Madrid. The 35-year-old player did not want the two events to overlap. For this reason, he asked for the national team match to be rescheduled for Sunday, which he said would be perfect for all parties.
“Let’s look at the calendar to see if something can be done. I know that tickets have not started selling yet and a rescheduling is possible,” Piqué continued in an interview published by El Confidencial.
The Davis Cup is very important to him. His company, Kosmos Group, organises the tournament in Madrid together with the International Tennis Federation.
In addition to wanting to be at the Davis Cup directly, the Catalan big club’s mainstay was worried that the Spanish national team’s tennis duel (also played in Madrid) might deter spectators from the tennis tournament.
After all, this interview took place in 2019 and Piqué had retired from the national team a year earlier. So it wouldn’t have been about him having to play in this match.
According to other audio leaks, Rubiales promised Piqué that he would try to reschedule the match eventually, but that didn’t happen. La Roja won by a clear 5-0 scoreline against Romania.
