On Friday, the direct battle for promotion to the second performance group of the Nations League will take place. Georgia just need a draw at home to be sure, while Macedonia need a win to keep their hopes alive for the last round. What to expect from the match and what to bet on?
Georgia can secure promotion to the second power league on Friday. With two rounds to go, it has a three-point lead over second-placed Macedonia and a better matchup. It only needs a draw at home to secure first place.
Macedonia in particular should have ambitions to qualify after their solid performance at the Euro. However, they exploded at home against Georgia 0:3 in June, making their path to promotion much more difficult.
The home side’s biggest star is winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the summer signing from Naples has four goals and three assists. In goal, Valencia’s number one catcher Giorgi Mamardashvili is in form.
On the away side, Napoli’s Eljif Elmas is worth mentioning, but compared to last season he is not getting many chances so far. On the other hand, Dinamo Zagreb’s right back Stefan Ristovski is a regular in the Croatian champion’s starting line-up.
Georgia relies on a goal-scoring attack, with twelve goals scored, and together with Greece and Turkey has the best offense in the third power league.
Macedonia, on the other hand, is more of a solid defender, scoring more than once in only two of their last six games, keeping a clean sheet three times. One of those came against Italy.
Considering the experience of the Macedonian squad from last year’s European Championships, as well as the quality defence that almost took the team to the World Cup, I think Macedonia will not lose.
