Cristiano Ronaldo is literally experiencing a fairytale start since his return to the Isles. He has maintained his goalscoring form both at club level and in the national team, putting smiles on the faces of the fans.
In recent games, the Portuguese has netted 5 times across all competitions. He provides coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a marquee firepower, however, club legend Gary Neville claims that Ronaldo has brought a big problem with him to Old Trafford among other things.
The Sky Sports pundit admitted that Ronaldo has had major problems associated with active pressing and after 15 years, nothing has changed. These qualities then limit the whole squad quite a bit.
“With the arrival of Cristiano came many positives, but also a few negatives. Even 15 years ago, the team did a lot of work for him, so he could always stay on top. But there, even in the big games, he didn’t fight enough.”
According to Neville, fans can only dream of playing with an active press in the attacking half of the pitch. What does this imply? “United have to play on the counter-attack, which creates a huge amount of work in midfield. It makes it easy for an average team to slip through the defence and the results will depend on that. Solskjaer has to do something about that.”
Ronaldo has made 4 entries on the scorers list in his last 2 appearances in the national jersey. Head coach Fernando Santos launched into his criticism of coach Solskjaer after the games.
In it, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the way Manchester City are spending their Portuguese starlets’ playing time.
