What has been whispered about in the football kool-aid circles of late has become a reality. Welsh soccer star Gareth Bale has ended his professional career, giving a lavish statement on his Twitter account.

The now thirty-three-year-old Welsh winger has decided to call it quits on his active football career with immediate effect. Bale made the announcement on his twitter account, where he also provided a rich statement on the matter.

“After careful and thorough consideration, I am announcing my immediate retirement from club and national team football. I feel incredibly lucky to have fulfilled my dream of doing the sport I love. It has brought me some of the best moments of my life,” Bale wrote in the statement attached above.

From my first touch at Southampton to my last at LAFC and everything in between has shaped a career of which I am immensely proud,” he continues.

“To my former clubs: Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid and LAFC. To all my former managers and coaches, my management team, my teammates, all my dedicated fans, my agents, friends and family. The influence you have had is immeasurable,” added the former Tottenham and Real Madrid player.

Bale’s career

Bale began his adult career at Southampton, from where he transferred to Tottenham in 2007. The transfer fee at the time was €14.7 million. And it was in the English club that he came to the attention of Real Madrid thanks to his performances.

He joined the royal club in September 2013. He then played 258 games for the Spanish giant across all competitions, scoring 106 goals and assisting 67 more. He returned to Tottenham on loan in 2020.

In July last year, he left for the American competition MLS, where he appeared in 14 matches for Los Angeles FC. It was at this club that Bale ended his football career.

In his club career, Bale played in a total of 554 matches, scoring 186 goals and assisting in another 139. He recorded 111 games and 40 goals for the Wales A-team during his national team career.

He was Welsh Footballer of the Year six times. And his greatest team achievements? He won the Champions League five times, lifted the Spanish champion’s trophy three times, and also won the Spanish Cup and the English FA Cup.
