Gaethje rages: McGregor is becoming more and more irrelevant, I would never let him fight for the title!
Charles Oliveira has his first successful title defense under his belt, defeating Dustin Poirier. Justin Gaethje was expected to be his next challenger, but Conor McGregor’s name is being bandied about more and more and the champion would like to face him. Charles Oliveira has his first successful title defense under his belt, defeating Dustin Poirier. Justin Gaethje was expected to be his next challenger, but Conor McGregor’s name is being bandied about more and more and the champion would like to face him. That’s why the American fighter is furious.
Justin Gaethje is now the number one lightweight, so he is immediately below the champion Charles Oliveira in the rankings. He has lost only one of his last six fights, when he fought undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov for the belt.
Most recently, he defeated Michael Chandler in a terrific fight, who had just fought Oliveira for the belt before his fight with Gaethje. So, all things considered, the fact that Gaethje should be the Brazilian’s next challenger is logical. But that may not be the case.
Conor McGregor has taken to social media to ask when he will see a fight with Oliveira. He’s clearly not opposed to it. As he himself admitted, he has a family to support and only a fool would refuse an offer to earn money.
So Gaethje became furious. “McGregor is irrelevant. As time goes on, he becomes more and more irrelevant. He hasn’t won a fight at lightweight since 2016,” he opined in an interview with TMZ.
For now, the UFC boss is still talking about the American being the next challenger. He hasn’t commented on Iro yet. However, if Gaethje gets a title shot and the belt, he says he won’t give McGregor a chance.
“He would have to go through the process, there’s no way I would just let him fight for the belt. There’s too many fighters in the queue who deserve it more,” he is clear.
He includes Beneil Dariush or Islam Makhachev among those who deserve a title shot.
Finally, Gaethje was very positive about the current champion. He said he has already told him that he deserves the belt. He described him as a strong competitor and a world number one. He can’t wait to see them fight each other.
