On Wednesday night, in the 1/16 final of the tournament in Washington, we will see a very attractive duel between the veteran Monfils and the hotly contested Bublik. Alexander Bublik will be the favourite for this match.

Alexander Bublik, a player who is currently ranked 25th in the ATP rankings, will be playing on the hard surface in Washington after a successful grass season. This Kazakh twenty-six year old tennis player has been experiencing extremely good form especially since switching to grass.

This season, he has already managed to add 1 title to his account and that was on grass in Halle, where he defeated players like Sinner, Struff, Zverev and in the final in a three-set battle defeated Andrey Rublev.

Bublik also had very good results at Wimbledon, where he managed to beat McDonald, Wolf and Marterer, but in the eighth round he was beaten by Andrey Rublev, who returned Bublik’s defeat from the final at Halle.

Gael Monfils, the now thirty-six-year-old French tennis player who has dropped to 323rd in the ATP rankings due to his prolonged absence, is not having a dream season.

Gael has had a very miserable year at ATP tournaments. His only ATP win this year was at home at the French Open, where he beat Sebastian Baez in a five-set battle. Otherwise, until Monday, Gael had 5 1st round losses in his other 5 tournament starts.

At the Washington tournament, however, he got a very nice draw in the 1st round and ran into American Fratangelo (only the 695th player in the world). In this match, as expected, he finally dominated and scored a 2:0 win

Wednesday will be a different story for Monfils, as he will face the aforementioned Bublik, who, if he can make the transition from grass to hard surface, will have no problems with Monfils and will advance to the next round.
