Gabon have made it through the first match of the group stage. They beat the group’s outsiders, Comoros, 1-0. Ex-Spartan Guelor Kanga was in the line-up, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was missing.
Ghana, on the other hand, had an unpleasant opponent at the start. Morocco is one of the favourites of the tournament and thanks to a goal late in the match, they confirmed their role as favourites and won 1: 0. Ghana must win on Friday if they want to qualify.
Gabon cannot rely on Aubameyang, who is in quarantine because of a coronavirus infection. So the focus is now on the shoulders of Aaron Boupendz, the author of the winning goal against Comoros.
In the Ghana squad, Arsenal central midfielder Thomas Partey is worth mentioning alongside the Ayew brothers with Premier League experience. Another ex-spartan Benjamin Tetteh also got into the game against Morocco.
Gabon relies on a well-functioning defence, getting no more than one goal in four of their last six games.
Ghana’s failure to score in their first group game is not such a surprise, as they have only scored three times in their last five games.
Given Ghana’s more experienced squad and the absence of Aubameyang, I think Gabon will lose.
