Fury vs. Usyk unification bout in sight
The heavyweight royalty of combat sports is about to face perhaps the greatest duel in modern boxing history. After Oleksandr Usyk defended the WBO, WBA, IBF and IBO heavyweight boxing world championship belts against Anthony Joshua at the weekend, there was immediate demand among fans and media for a unification battle.
This was fueled by the Ukrainian boxer himself when he challenged the legendary Tyson Fury immediately after winning. The latter accepted the offer for a superfight in his traditional style almost immediately after Usyk’s challenge. “Usyk and Joshua are s**ches, I’d bury them both in the ground in one night, get out your cheque books because the Gypsy King will be here forever,” he shouted in a video on his social media.
Gypsy King demands obscene money
The problem is that the WBC championship belt holder is currently retired from boxing. Or is he? Rumours that the “Gypsy King” has signed a deal with a certain Saudi investor group who would like to see the biggest fight on their soil are probably taking on real shape.
“I’m retired from boxing, however, I’ll be back, but it has to be for obscene money,” he told Talksport. “Mayweather got £400 million with Pacquiao, I want £500 million and you have seven days to do it,” he said, putting his staggering demands at £15 billion.
“It’s the biggest fight in the world, so it has to be the biggest payday in the world,” he explained his stance on a possible retirement. “I know they have the money, they offered Tiger Woods $1 billion,” he added of the Saudi investors, referring to the Arabs offering the golf legend an extraordinary amount of money to join their golf league.
A fight between two undefeated boxers would obviously be a big spectacle that would generate a huge amount of funds. There are rumours in the media that the date of December 17, 2022 is the day when this boxing story should get its denouement in Riyadh.
