Funny thing about Hag’s penalty: he let United players listen to their rival’s celebrations after the derby

Manchester United is not having a good season at all. In the Premier League they are floundering around the middle of the table and the Champions League started with two defeats. Moreover, information is coming out of the club that the players are not entirely happy with coach Erik ten Hag.

But lately, the Red Devils have seemed to be picking themselves up. In the league they won twice in a row when they beat Brentford and Sheffield, and in the Champions League they beat Copenhagen when two of the most criticised players shone – Harry Maguire scored the winning goal, Andre Onana grabbed a penalty in the set-up.

Therefore, there was a slight enthusiasm that the derby might not be so clear-cut and maybe United can even surprise.

But those notions were quickly gone in the 26th minute when Erling Haaland opened the scoring. The Norwegian hitman added a second goal in the second half, Phil Foden rounded off the scoring for the final 3-0.

Special penalty

Erik ten Hag was very unhappy with the performance of his charges and according to The Sun, he made them feel it a lot. After the game, he reportedly made all the players sit in the booth in silence and listen to the joyous celebrations coming from the Manchester City booth.

Moreover, the Dutch coach promised the players a day off if they beat their city rival. Logically, that didn’t happen. On the contrary, according to The Sun newspaper, ten Hag imposed homework on the players in the form of a video where they had to look for mistakes they made during the match.

United have lost five times in ten rounds of the Premier League and are in eighth place in the table, 11 points behind leaders Tottenham. It is the worst start to a season since 1986, when coach Ron Atkinson was sacked at this point.
