The Championship season is going to be a long one, with all teams having to play 46 games. With 26 rounds completed so far, let’s take a look at who’s gunning for a ticket back into the elite competition.
The hottest candidate is Fulham. The south London side has collected 54 points, five points ahead of second-placed Bournemouth. Its biggest strength is its offense, the black and whites have already scored 70 goals. The second most offensive team is Blackburn with only 44 goals.
And when it comes to Fulham’s offense, it’s impossible not to mention the man behind it. Aleksandar Mitrovic has started 25 games and scored a staggering 27 goals and added 7 assists. He’s on course for a Championship record.
The current record for most goals scored in a single season is held jointly by Ivan Toney and Glenn Murray. The former scored 30 goals for Brentford last season, while Murray did the same in 2012/13 for Crystal Palace.
teemu Pukki netted 29 goals in the 2018/19 season, while Armstrong, McCormack and Rhodes scored 28 goals. Mitrovic is so very close to breaking that record, he only needs to score 4 goals in the remaining 20 games to do so. It would have to be a very big collapse for the Serbian forward not to break this record.
And what about the other advancers? The 1st and 2nd place teams go straight into the Premier League, the 3rd-6th Championship teams play a playoff for the last promotion spot.
Bournemouth are in second place with 49 points. However, Blackburn are on their back with the same number of points. Fourth is Queens Park Rangers with 44 points. In fifth place is last year’s relegated West Brom, who have 42 points. Sixth placed Middlesborough have the same number of points.
It’s going to be very even with the play-offs, though, with seventh-placed Huddersfield just one point behind Middlesborough. Eighth-placed Stoke City have four fewer than Middlesborough but a game to spare.
